MK1b MOT Failure

All, I'm really sad at having to do this (and apologies for this being my first post on here) but my MK1 has finally succumbed to the rust, so I'm selling it for spares/ repair. It failed on rust to the sills mainly, and I don't have the time or space to store the car any more.

It's a mk1 b with 144,000 miles. I've owned it almost 4 1/2 years now and I only ever used it in the summer and was kept in my garage over the winter, the rust still managed to kill it though! This is my 3rd MR2, I've been involved (on and off) in MR2's for 13-14 years now, having had two MK2's previously. I used to be on the IMOC forum back when it was a Yahoo group, many many years ago!

I've somehow managed to fill my garage with crap though and so the car won't fit in any more and I just don't have time to drive and fix it either, it's been off the road since last September.

It's got uprated KYB shock inserts with uprated springs, which were fitted a couple of years ago.

For the last MOT it had new handbrake cables and a rear near side calliper. It only did about 200 miles until it was taken off the road so this is like new. It's also got Phillips Superbrite bulbs in the headlights. The car starts and is drivable, it does have the 5th gear pop out issue though.

The alloys are OZ Superleggera 15" alloys with good Yokohama Parada Spec B tyres on it. These are really good wheels, very, very light. They are a bit brake dusty, but aren't kerbed.

I'm not sure the best way of doing this, but if anyone wants the whole car they can have it for £400 which I don't think is too bad, as the wheels are worth a fair bit on their own, and the shocks/ springs are too.

I'll sell the wheels on their own for £250 if you can provide a set of wheels I can put on so it can be moved. But I'd rather just sell the car as a whole.

That is a smart-looking car, MOT aside. And _very_ nice wheels too.

Someone needs to give this car a good home (but no can do myself as I'm just about to get a mk1b myself, already paid for).

Re the rust: Underneath, I don't *think* it's too bad, both sills and front arches were welded up a couple of years ago to a decent standard. So I think it's just fixing up some of that work. I'll try and get some pictures of the underneath tomorrow. I do think it's less than I've had done before for previous MOT's though, it's just I don't have time, space and money for the car anymore.

Updated with new photo's of the underneath. Looking at them, it's not too bad, there are three places that need patching up. And the underseal where it's been repaired before has started to come away in a couple of places.

Hi All, sorry for the delay in replying - I've been trying to avoid a computer over christmas as I generally spend for too much time in front of one!

The car has been provisionally sold, with a deposit having being paid. The wheels are still up for sale though if anyone is interested in them?

Hi Gary,
I am the ' Unskilled Gorilla' who has bought this car. I am neither unskilled, nor a Gorilla. I have saved several MR2s from being crushed, with all their good parts going to waste.
If this car is anywhere near saveable, than it will be saved. I am not in it for a 'quick buck'. I have spent several hours lying on my back under a MR2 getting parts off that i have sold for a tenner! I have owned Mk1 MR2s for the last 20 years (since i was 21 years old).
I would rather see 1000 MR2s on the road in the UK that are in excellent condition, rather than 1500 MR2s in scruffy condition with bits that are broken and missing.
With Toyota selling less and less parts for the Mk1 MR2 (early bumper bars, rear wings, rear subframes etc etc are not available anymore), some cars would have been lost forever if i hadn't had the parts here to save them. I have even had someone come over from Canada to pick up injection system and he thanked me for saving his car from having to be sent to the scrap yard as it couldn't meet thier emmisions.
I did sell one car that i had started to sell parts off that someone wanted to have for parts to help rebuild his. 1 week later he rang me to say he had sold it for scrap after having the bits he wanted. I don't send any MR2 to scrap until there is nothing useable left on it. So there is no waste with me.
Just though i should clarify what i do.

hi neil , so your the unskilled gorilla who beat me to that car :lol: , the previous owner of the car told me it was going to be broken for parts by the person buying it ( you it now turns out ) . i have not seen any posts on here of you saving cars at all or project threads showing mk1 members how to repair them only cars you have just found or offering parts in the for sale sections . there is nothing wrong with this and i don't have a problem with it ,you help people save there cars but at the end of the day you break mk1s FACT and lots off them . i was wanting this car for the wife for tatton show, i personally think it will not be put back on the road as you don't restore them ( prove me wrong and save it :thumbup:) . i dont want this mk1 in your grave yard as this pic on ebay shows http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TOYOTA-MR2-MK1-nut-Breaking-Spares-AW11-WORLDWIDE-SALES/250966970365?ssPageName=WDVW&rd=1&ih=015&category=9886&cmd=ViewItem . if you think this car is beyond you skills to repair it i will buy it off you and save ( i,m a bit of a wizard you know :lol:) it for more years of enjoyment . ps this is a pi*s take and non malicious at all Neil , you sell good usable parts and do help people out :clap: , but the next time you are stripping parts take some pics and post up how to get the bloody things off ,you will know all the easy ways now and it will help other members out . don't you dare break that car now or i will start a club petition for it to be saved :idea:

Hi Gary,
I know you were only having a little joke. I have saved a few MR2s, and i will have another for sale next week that has been saved, it's a G reg T bar.
If i can save this car, then i will (god knows i should have enough parts here for it!!)
If anyone needs any advice on how to take parts off, then please email or ring me, i am more than happy to help any MR2 owners. (i wish someone would tell me how to change the fuel pump in less than 4hrs!!!).
I am a true fan of the Mk1 MR2, i've driven over 100,000 miles in them over the years.
