If there are maps of the route being handed out at the start of this one, although I won't be able to make it, any chance of a copy so I can maybe check it out at a later date?

Good to meet everyone today, lots of fun and lots of new road to go and play on. Sorry to the cyclist collapsed just as I edged past him though...

Thanks for the organisers especially, if I may comment, it would have been nice to stop and chat a bit longer as I was itching with questions for the boffins. Probably my fault for arriving late and not hanging around at the pub at the end.

Thanks for asking, Kev! Just got home via 2 AA relays.
Only just got going on the run and some water hit the windscreen. Funny, I thought, is Sam in front washing his windscreen? Next thing I spot the steam and the temp gauge goes from normal to eeeeek in about ten seconds. I pulled off and stopped to cool down but even an hour later it was still overheating and the idle speed even now is bouncing all over the shop.
Still got coolant in the expansion tank though, weirdly.
Really gutted to have missed the fun and broken the car. Great to meet you all though, Nick.

That is terrible Nick, we had some fun and games as Bill saw you turn off and thought you had gone the wrong way so he waited for you. Meanwhile the rest of us carried on. We stopped a while later but could not get a signal on our phones then Bill shot past us and Gary gave chase but could not catch him. We then had to drive until we got a phone signal and eventually we found him but not you. He said he saw smoke coming out of your car but we did not have a number to call you.

If I can be of any help do not hesitate to ask, you are in Huddersfield are you? When you say water hit the windscreen does that mean radiator? The bouncing idle will be air in the system so should not be a problem.

Nick45
13th May 2012, 07:19 PM
Coverco, sincere apologies if I caused people hassle and many thanks to Bill for stopping. I thought from where I peeled off that he would know I hadn't taken a wrong turn but was ducking out for some reason and I'd hoped everyone would just carry on because I didn't want to spoil anyone else's fun.
I knew my radiator was dodgy (just bought a spare but not fitted yet - doh!) but as I'd only been losing a tiny bit of coolant for the last week I thought it'd be OK. Wrong again.
I called out the AA but didn't have a clue where I was - what a palaver! Anyway got sorted eventually.
Hopefully a replacement radiator and bleed of the system will sort it out. Just hope I haven't cooked anything prior to pulling over. The engine was HOT HOT HOT!!!!! If anyone can link me to a "how to" guide I'd really appreciate it. Sorry again to all if I mucked up the convoy.

What a great day!
Have returned home with sun burnt face; thanks to having T-bar off all day, aching shoulders; after swinging the steering wheel around those tight turns, clothes stinking of fumes; after following 9 MR2`s and their hot exhaust whofting over the windscreen into the car and a BIG CHEESY GRIN.
Good to see you guys today.
So glad to have made the effort to get there, but that`s nowt to the effort put in by Gary to make it a enjoyable day!

All I have got from the day is this one from around 10am of my electricity starved car. Looking at the above posts it sounds like I was the first casualty of many today! Dropped into the Cat & Fiddle at 5pm though to say hello, sounds like another great success :-)

I got quite sun-burned too mine isn't a t-bar. I just took the sun-roof out. The tunnel was a hi-light for me. I'd have been happy to go through it a few more times so I could video it!

Kris - I was really looking forward to seeing your car - such a shame.
Nick - Bad luck. You've got a lovely looking car. I was intending taking some more pictures of it before you disappeared.

Right, here's some pics.

First one is of my lovely Magnex. I went to Tommy's on Saturday morning to get it fitted and it's made a huge difference to the car - and it looks cool!

Tunnel is to the left hand side, Club banner was essential back then and had to be pegged out at every opportunity, look again at the pic, we're all old folk so a comfy seat and a packed lunch is essential!

coverco
15th May 2012, 06:25 PM
Weirdly I meant to type left hand side but at my age my fingers do different things to my brain. I don't know anyone in the picture but I have seen it before when you posted it just after your wife passed away last year so I guess I do know that the Barbara is the lady in the background waving to the camera and I think you are in front of her talking to the chap in the baseball cap. I did not realise where the picture was taken at the time.

The only person who had a chair in the car on Sunday was Mr. Hulme but he did not get a chance to get it out as we spent most of the time driving :-)

So with all the results in (well I had to guess one and to maintain the averages I have not asked Kris Bates though I have included Nicks but excluded the miles he covered with the AA).

Eleven MK1s - Total MK1 Miles 2268

Graham

PS. Love the 2003/4 pic outside the tunnel - I wonder how many of the cars are still about!! Amazing that with few MK1s on the road our turn out on Sunday was double that in the photograph - unless there are others out of camera shot!

To reduce the travelling time from Windermere to Macclesfield and to get an extra hour in bed we took the motorhome down to just outside Preston - not often both Barry the Bessacarr and the MK1 are both out together

That was a great day out. Cheers Gary. Hope the meal made up for your disappointment Kris. Glad to hear you're sorted again, Nick. Now, I know that statistics can be made to show anything, but I'm interested to know what the combined age of the cars was and the combined mileage before we asked them to all endure a mammoth up-hill and down-dale thrash on the same day. I get the feeling that the results would be something that current car manufacturers can only dream of.

Ha ha! a BIT extreme, that. I am a bit concerned we are on a slippery slope of upgrading... from this:

I will be up for the post run meal next time. I think it's an institution that needs to be er, instituted! As for the telescopic lounge on wheels, yes, they're all well and good till you want to go into town and park to do some shopping. I've been told to buy TWO pay and display tickets before now when my rig overhung onto another bay. Parking the above could get very expensive. Now, I thought you hadn't been out and about in your new van yet? You could pass that photo off as '... and this was taken when we were crossing the Pyranees back into France...'

Its true, the pic of the van has been shamelessly stolen from the last owner's photostream, the furthest it has been so far with us is the Wirral!

Yeah, its exactly why I didnt go for a coachbuilt van, we have limited space on the drive, limited space on UK roads & not enough cash to sustain sub-20 mpg. The van is actually shorter than our C4 Picasso thanks to its mid engined layout ;-)

Hulme but he did not get a chance to get it out as we spent most of the time driving :-)

basically Tommy the pic is how the Club used to be so eveyone but me & Barb. are the Loughborough "Mafia" so its Fred & Doris Sanderson, Stuart & Chris Kynoch, Richard & Rachel Morgan & Issabel (can't ever remember her surname) pic taken by Thomas Morgan
i kind of took over the peak district run that day for a few years

I was on this run, and had the pleasure of meeting you all, Doris and Fred would come to tatton up to about 3 years ago and have helped kept the club going and still send out the club magazine, two great members.

It is strange how things change, in the early 90's I was into kitcars and was a member of quite a few owners clubs which used to supply a magazine and organise runs and meets at the big shows. In those days of course we had no internet so the magazines were highly useful and informative (although they were simple photocopied typed sheets).
My wife and I used to go to the shows, however when kids came along the cars dissappeared :-(

There are not many wives these days who go on the runs, in fact on Sunday it was a completely male meeting. I have tried to convince my wife to come along as the kids are now old enough to look after themselves but she is not terribly interested.

My wife was originally going to come along, but things got complicated with the kids. I think she'd enjoy the scenery and I'm sure she will come on a run soon. The July 1st one is no good though as we're already booked for that day.

and from way back in 2005 (I think! might have been '04) a pic of my first ever club run out, taken from above Swainsley tunnel

yes Bill you have, just not that one in my pic. everyone who was there other than Thomas who took the pic is in the pic,
yes again Tesco car park backs on to Whittle road, the site used to be an aerodrome, just up the road is a factory which was originally the Rootes aircraft factory built in 1936 & during WW2 was involved in building mosquitos which were then flown off from the aerodrome by women pilots among them was one Amy Johnson
I met my Barbara in that factory 26 years ago
as a child I used to go there to watch gliders towed up by a Tigermoth biplane

A deffinate possative is that with a club that has seen its membeship fall dramatically recently, when I did the peak district run turn out was 6 or 7 cars now with a much smaller club Gary gets double that figure, things are looking good well done NW area for making an event a sucess story so take a pat on the back both Bill & GaryI know how much work goes into putting this run together
