Perhaps the holy grail of kitted Mk1s, the Haslbeck, I know of only 2 worldwide. I have located one of them and it is on it's way to Woodsport early next week, I've been trying to track one of these down for years, lots of pics to come.

One of the very few catalogue images to be found of it, the old supercharger site had pics but that's gone now...

Found a few more pics, it's amazing what you find when you're spelling Haslbeck properly :D

Love the new taillight centre panel, that would be nice on a standard car...

Love the rear valence....

http://www.mr2mk1club.com/images/imported/2013/05/04_zps4df771fb-1.jpg

Well the Haslbeck finally arrived today, I knew the car itself was going to be in a very poor state but wasn't prepared for just how bad, just about the most rotten Mk1 I've ever seen (and I've seen a lot!)

Here it is, one of two believed "Silver Knight" UK Haslbecks, the other one was white and I have no idea where it is or if it even exists anymore.... oddly this car was previously white so it could well have been the same car making it unique in the UK..... we'll never know.

Presenting the rarest Toyota Mk1 kit option ever sold...

http://www.mr2mk1club.com/images/imported/2013/05/Img_2038_zps64d9c10c-1.jpg

It has the original wheels that came with the Haslbecks, I have no history of these at all or if they were fitted to anything else at the time, but they seem to be pictured in all of the Haslbeck literature of the time...

http://www.mr2mk1club.com/images/imported/2013/05/Img_2050_zpsd0bda939-1.jpg

It took around an hour to remove the entire kit, mainly because the car was so rotten most of the kit was barely attached and practically every bolt snapped off... how's this for rot...

http://www.mr2mk1club.com/images/imported/2013/05/Img_2043_zps30241e1e-1.jpg

http://www.mr2mk1club.com/images/imported/2013/05/Img_2042_zps09e63420-1.jpg

http://www.mr2mk1club.com/images/imported/2013/05/Img_2041_zps662a4882-1.jpg

In that quarter pic above there was no panel right up to 3" from the top, completely rotted out.

The kit removed from the car....

http://www.mr2mk1club.com/images/imported/2013/05/Img_2044_zps49562751-1.jpg

http://www.mr2mk1club.com/images/imported/2013/05/Img_2045_zps3446de2d-1.jpg

http://www.mr2mk1club.com/images/imported/2013/05/Img_2046_zps8f7e3e1e-1.jpg

Front splitter needs repair before any molding can happen...

http://www.mr2mk1club.com/images/imported/2013/05/Img_2047_zps2916379b-1.jpg

Love this number plate panel, this can be fitted to a standard Mk1 and will really facelift the rear...

http://www.mr2mk1club.com/images/imported/2013/05/Img_2049_zps7c2e5a60-1.jpg

So I now have a few months of panel repairing and repainting so the molds will be perfect, i'd estimate the molding process to take up to 8 months but I am determined to save this kit.

If anyone is interested in having the rarest kit Toyota ever commissioned for the Mk1 let me know.

When I saw the photo of the car jacked up under the sill I thought: "Careful with that jack, Eugene". :-o

That is some rust!

Presumably you're scrapping/stripping the rest of the car. You're right about the number plate panel - very subtle. A market for them, I think.

Like it, although for me it would be better if the front lower bumper section had no slats. Big centre and corner intakes would look better that the slatted holes in my opinion

Likewise, jimi. ;)

Paul, that really is the only body kit I've ever liked on any car. As a rule I have no time for them but this one looks like a production car special rather than a boy race add-on. Plenty of hints of Testarossa vents. Very 80s!

Very 944 looking front vents look s2 style. Nice kit for soeone with rotten arches as you would have to cut them to fit bigger wheels. There is a write up of someone restoring one of these on the titernet somewhere nice kit though

I guess Toyota got the styling of this kit spot on, it seems to be very popular with nearly everyone, I love the fact it was a production item rather than an aftermarket kit, true retro styling from the manufacturer.

I have no idea on pricing yet, it is going to take months to get this molded, there are 11 different molds needed for this kit so it isn't going to be cheap.

coverco
9th May 2013, 05:55 PM
So are you saying you could buy one of these at your local Toyota dealer Paul?

Woodsport
9th May 2013, 06:06 PM
You couldn't buy just the kit, it was a dealer option in Germany and via Silver knight in the UK when you wanted to buy a new Mk1, Toyota commissioned Haslbeck to make the kit and was offered in the dealership as a Haslbeck special edition or "Mr2 High Tech" as it was known in Germany at the time. My best guess is Toyota would deliver a brand new Mk1 to Haslbeck for the kit fitting.

That is what makes this kit so special compared to aftermarket stuff, it's the MK1 version of a Mk2 TRD kit I suppose.

coverco
9th May 2013, 06:39 PM
I don't claim to be a MK1 expert but I had never heard of or seen one of these until you posted the picture Paul. I am guessing as they are so rare that the cost was quite high? It does seem strange that if it was OEM they did not improve the standard engine. Every day is a school day :-)

Woodsport
9th May 2013, 07:06 PM
I was given the car for free , the owner wanted it to go to someone who would save the kit and breath life back into the Haslbeck heritage.

I'll admit I've learned a lot this past week from German owners who know a lot more about the history of it, I'd only heard of the name and knew what it looked like before that.

coverco
9th May 2013, 07:12 PM
Sorry Paul I didn't mean how much did you pay, I meant they must have been expensive new which means they are really rare. I suppose it is a bit like black cars they were quite a lot extra to buy and so are now quite rare :-)

Woodsport
10th May 2013, 06:18 AM
It's ok Tommy I don't mind anyone knowing it was free, the important thing is the kit is saved.

coverco
10th May 2013, 09:18 AM
Any idea how much extra they were when new? I reckon it must have been quite a bit. It is great that you have saved it, will it be a problem reproducing, Toyota have been known to be a bit funny about things like that.

I don't know to be honest, i'd doubt they'd care about a kit from the 80's that is no longer available.

You would think they wouldn't care but I believe they stopped someone selling decals which they didn't even produce anymore. Did Toyota actually design and sell the kit or was it Haslebank, depending on who has the rights to the kit will determine whether they allow it or not, could be interesting.

coverco
10th May 2013, 08:02 PM
I am not sure if copyright is the issue Bill. Reproducing cars has caused many disputes over the years, look at the problems Westfield had a few years ago and don't take your Ferrari replica to Italy as they will impound it and arrest you. I think the kit should be saved and hope Paul does it but you do need to be wary of copying a car manufacturers product.

You may know more than I but BMW shut down a company in the UK that made tea cossies & mug which resembled the original Mini as it infringed their copyright & Mini's have been around for more than 25 years.

Woodsport
11th May 2013, 08:23 AM
Thing is, even if I cosmetically altered each panel and put my own stamp on it I wouldn't feel right about that, that would negate any copyright issue but it would lose some of its heritage, in effect i'd be producing a Woodsport kit inspired by the Haslbeck design, and I don't really want to do that and I wouldn't feel right calling it my kit even if I made major changes to it. Tommy the kit was designed by Haslbeck for Toyota who commissioned it for their special edition "Mr2 high tech" option in Germany, later to be offered by Silver Knight in the UK.

I still think it's incredibly cool Toyota did this, they normally go TRD with everything.

coverco
12th May 2013, 05:52 PM
So in theory Toyota still own the rights to the kit. It is your choice Paul but I would personally not want to spend a lot of money/ man hours ( as self employed people they are the same thing) and then find out Toyota objected to the project. Perhaps a few emails to Toyota would be prudent?

Woodsport
12th May 2013, 06:12 PM
I don't really know who owns the rights, if any, bodykits are such a grey area as far as patent goes, I really don't think it's an issue, we could for example say the guy that makes the MK1 rear wheel arch or sill panels is even more in breach..... I don't think anyone really cares with vehicles this old, the kit has long been obsolete by over two decades.

coverco
12th May 2013, 10:01 PM
I don't really know who owns the rights

I would personally do some research as to who does own the rights before moving the project forward, but good luck with whatever you decide to do.

i 'd be wanting the full kit if price is reasonable :) and am looking at getting a bodykit towards the end of this year if you've done moulding it and playing with your gelcoat then i'll definitely have one please sir :)

Good news is my moulder has inspected the panels and does not see a problem moulding them all, the first one to be completed will be the rear number plate panel which will be sold as an individual item, this will facelift the rear UK spec lights, price to be decided but i reckon £80-£100 posted.

The rest of the kit should be available sometime early 2014 as a best guess, there are 12 individual moulds to make.

Yes i am thinking i can raise revenue from the number plate surrounds to help pay for the kit moulding costs, which will be a lot! I have had huge interest in that surround as it really does look good and tranforms the UK spec lights.

I expect to have this ready within 4-5 weeks as a product.

I Think i must be the ONLY person who does not like this kit! I do, however, think it is great that it is being resurrected and fantastic that there is so much interest in it. I hope it works out for you Paul.

I think the kit has elements of the Lancia Delta Integrale about it and obvious 1980's Ferrari hues. I also like the rear plate surround. Unfortunately, i am just not a fan of aftermarket (or even many OEM) body kits.

I look forward to seeing some finished cars next year.

Cheers

Kits are always a personal choice, especially aftermarket stuff which can be quite wild.... what makes this one so special is the Toyota heritage, i can't recall them ever doing that before apart from something TRD produce, it's hard to remember this was an OEM option in Germany at the time.

The rear number plate holder panel is now available, i pick up the first panels tomorrow.

This panel nicely facelifts the rear of a Mk1....

You will need to add your own number plate lamps, these can be any type you like, there are literally hundreds to choose from, inset flush mounted ones, to raised LED versions, whatever you like, some examples....

The number plate panel can be simply bonded in place, or secured with screws/bolts behind the number plate itself.

I will have pics of the actual product tomorrow, the price is £95 delivered to the UK.

Woodsport

Unfortunately i won't be producing the kit, there are too many pieces and the cost is too high to produce, i worked it all out and each kit would have retailed for over £2500 to cover my costs, there just aren't enough potential sales to warrant that, so i'm selling the kit to someone who will be saving it.

The number plate panel is a nice little Toyota item though.

Don't think it's particular to MK1 MR2's it's the same the world over with everything, I've been pressured into organising events before that EVERYONE will come to, until you ask them to actually turn up & put their hand in their pocket. Bit like selling a car, they always phone up ask loads of questions, say they will be there in an hour & never turn up, why? FFS if you're not going to turn up just tell me.

Let me refresh your memory Paul, on the Facebook MR2 MK1 Club page (which incidentally has absolutely nothing to do with the MR2 MK1 Club) on the 20th September on a post started by Wolfgang Klein you asked Tony Froude if he was going to make any more spare wheel covers, he said no but you replied and I quote " definite taker here if you do".

To be honest Tony Froude's covers were not as good as the current covers we are selling and they were from memory £13 more expensive and the velcro closing at the top was very cheap and nasty. The reason I developed the product was because I saw that post and thought that is a good idea.

The main difference between the two products though is the beneficiary, Tony Froude's cover would benefit Tony Froude the MR2 MK1 club cover would only benefit the MR2 MK1 club as I don't even charge for signing the covers :-)

the covers in the club shop do look to be good.
I was part of the team that first thought of doing these, we thought up the idea, found a supplier and invested in an idea. We never made a fortune and the small number sold meant costs were high. As Tony now does his own thing and is not involved with the club his outlay to make these is probably still high.
Good luck with the sales in the shop. If yours are better and cheaper then you should be comfortable in the product. If Tony's are still selling then he must still be doing something right!
just from a pure Toyota look I prefer just to have the logo. My own preference.

Looks like your producer makes good quality parts. i do like that panel, i think it looks like the production design should have done.
I have a pair of brand new MK1a front valances which, as you know, are rare in good condition let alone NOS. I have been holding on to these to eventually get fiber glass reproductions made. Would you (or your supplier) be interested in doing this Paul? Given the current scarcity of the MK1a and the tendency for these panels o rot, i think demand will increase both here and abroad.

Yes that is something we could do, the only problem is it costs roughly £300 to have each master mold made, so that is £600 in tooling before we start.

In my experience it is very difficult to sell Mk1 parts in any great numbers, while there is still a good worldwide online community, the reality is we would probably get 5 or 6 takers per year, it's a very small market. So getting the initial costs back alone is hard let alone making any profit, I see it as more of a long term product that will help keep them alive, but ultimately not something that makes sense to do from a business perspective.

I have several products like that now, the polybush inserts being one of them, no real profit in them, just a product that helps keep the Mk1 alive.

Please make this kit Woodsport. I know it has been almost a decade since this thread has been revived but there is a huge market for this bodykit in particular because as you stated, this was the rarest option from factory for the AW11. Y'all make good bodykits and I have been saving up to get the woods port front lip and fenders from woods port.org however me and many others in the North American and European market would pay top dollar to get a fiber glass, re-manufactured body kit from someone as renown as Woodsport!
