*** UPDATE ***
Reduced as the bumper skin is incorrect (MK1a) and the outer arch skin has been replaced at some point on one side. Everything else is perfect.

Sorry if this is a members car but why would you not at least remove the rubbish from the foot wells?

The rest of the car looks good, not sure on the price but it may be worth that to the right buyer.

Going from the ebay username I say the car belongs to the OP...

Car looks nice and worth the money, if solid. Do you know why its got a mk1a front bumper?

I believe it is the OPs car. It has been on here several times now.

Well spotted on the 1a bumper! Any comment OP? The first class paint match of the MK1a bumper and the MK1b stripes could suggest a complete respray.

If it is the wrong bumper then it could be dodgy but it is the same as was on the well known T Bar that I had. Might it be the angle and lighting? It isn't flat and is pretty amazing behind the bumper with no rust and all original structure. However the whole car has definitely been resprayed on the outside at some point. If it has the wrong bumper then that is pretty poor for sure.

By the time I had cleaned it I had had enough. Did intend to go back and retake them but ... I have got a lazy streak :(

Maybe she does have a "history"? I've taken her off sale until I get to the bottom of it as she is listed as pretty much perfect. The front bumper didn't have actual stripes when I got her so I had to put those on. Perhaps she had a light front end prang? I can see the socket set coming out tomorrow ;)

Here's some more pics of the front bumper. It doesn't look like a MK1a bumper to me but I am not an expert. The screws in one of the pics don't look like they have ever been unscrewed, at least not recently. What do you think?

Ok, have a look at these two:

Mk1a:

Mk1b:

http://www.mr2mk1club.com/garage_attachment.php?id=659&attach_type=full

If you look along the bottom edge of the bumper (not the splitter, ignore that) you'll see that the edge is flat in the middle, and then curves down on either side of the numberplate before continuing under the indicators and round to the wings. On the mk1a these 'drops' are more central on the bumper than on the mk1b.

A head-on shot of your car would be useful as I can;t be sure which you have from the images provided ;)

He's got a 1b bumper, the 1a is flat. Side view shows a slight slope.

It's obvious. That kit is on a mk1a and the front bumper is totally different.

The pic angles make it look like its got a sloping nose, but for me that is definitely a 1a bumperskin as it has got 2 lines moulded into it, 1b only has one.

Id say its definitely a 1a. Doesn't the 1a bumper also require a 1a bumper bar?

Hats off to the OP for doing the right thing and investigating further before selling. Its probably nothing major but it is best you deal with it before a potential buyer does ;-)

Good luck with the sale

hi,not 100 % sure on the A bumper skin not fitting a B bar but they have done it hear , the A bar has 2 tow eyes and the b bar 1 also the foam support are different from A to B . The bumper is slopping down at the front which makes me think the B foam and B bar are still fitted . With out seeing the car it looks to me like the original skin was scraped to the point it was easier to replace than repair . The give away for me its not had a heavy shunt on the front is the original number plate is still on .

That MK1a skin ain't staying ;) I'll post some pics of what is underneath. Maybe it was a scrape in the days before Ebay ... I'm sure I can find the correct one there eventually :)

Hey thanks! Don't worry I will be open about it if I find anything nasty under that MK1a skin. Have been ripped off too many times myself to not be honest when selling ... so hard to find mint classics that don't have a hidden story :(

Me too...it can be a painful process buying cars! Honesty is indeed the best way in my opinion too.

Cheers

As others said, it was definitely a MKIa bumper. The more narrowly spaced underscut on the center bottom alone gives it away. The MKIb had the much wider spacing as referred to earlier. Also the double upper concave contour lines were also unique to the MKIa, on both the black fronted '85, and color coded '86.

That being said it is still a great looking car, and as long as the new bumper/bar, etc. were solid I would definitely consider it if it were over here. Car's that clean are hard to come across.

Only the skin has been replaced. The rest is mint. I wonder what happened to the original. It's a shame that the repairer didn't go to the trouble of installing the correct replacement part.

PS I just imported a car from Sand Diego (Laguna Beach)! Was sure it would be rust free from there ;)

If they replaced only the skin then the foam underneath would not fit it quite right due to the slightly different shape. Are you sure the foam is MKIb?

Laguna Beach is a bit north of San Diego, but close enough. I'd be curious to see the car if you end up posting pics. Did you run a background check on it to see if it had always been a southern California car?

I've been looking for a replacement for mine, which got rear ended a few months back, and had been lamenting how many many nice California cars have been bought by people in the north part of the country, only to eventually end up as rust buckets a few years later. Now we have to contend with you guys buying them too, lol?! Good luck with it.

I did a tonne of checks on her:

The MR2 still has the MK1b foam at a guess. I had a well known MR2 guy inspect it and he used a torch to shine into all the nooks and crannies of the front section. He did not take the skin off. He also pointed out that it just has the one towing eye.
