Yeah the white 3vz V6 with wide rear arches on imoc is mine. In two minds selling it as I have plans to wide arch the front. But to be sensible I should sell as I have too many projects. Feel free to come over and have a look. It's on a sorn though. Andy

They did not come as standard with a V6, therefore it is non standard. It is also quite an expensive modification and the MK1 has only recently started to increase in price. If you have a problem many garages will not touch it so you need to do your own maintenance or take it to one of the MR2 specialists.
Mr Chaiman Tom has a turbo and a V6 and both of them have had problems over the years :-)

Ahhh I see. Thx corveco
I will definitely need a specialist to keep on top of the maintenance as I am not that handy. I need to weigh that up against a standard mk1.
A standard mk1 is approaching 30 years old, will any competent garage be able to maintain it ?
Or do I need some old boy who has worked on these before and knows these well ?
Any recommendations for garages in Uxbridge/ Reading way. I didn't see anything on the forum.

So long as it's a good garage, they can work on them easily. The standard engine is just a corolla engine, nothing fancy. Only struggle is getting bits sometimes, as they're slowly thinning out.

You see this is the problem a V6 corolla!! The engine comes from a Camry usually and they were thin on the ground in the UK. A modified car is great if you are mechanically inclined, if not you are best to stick with standard, either the 4age or the 4agze. Although as the 4agze was never sold in this country even then you need some knowledge, parts are available for the engines but most mechanics will be scared of modified or imported cars.
A good 4age is a fine engine and it is standard in UK MK1s, try driving a standard car you will not be disappointed :-)

As usual 'Coveco' is talking bollocks, he's spouting 'facts' about things he knows nothing about, there is nothing on a V6 conversion that needs specialist knowledge other than identifying the parts, the whole conversion comes from the Toyota parts bin. You just need to ensure that the builder or previous owner has identified the component parts for you along with the relevant car information.

You write with confidence but you speak nonsense.
I've barely got a mechanical bone in my body but have had engine swapped mk1s for over 10 years.
The 4AGE IS a great engine but a standard mk1 can't keep up with a modern diesel, hence why a lot of people retro fit more modern engines.

It's a standard Camry engine with all standard Camry parts why would it have to be a specialist? Any competent mechanic will be able to look after it.

As long as you know the parts origins then I don't see why it should be an issue. That being said if there was an engine electrical issue you may need to seek out an auto electricain but you may have to do that with a standard MK1 anyway.

Have any of you guys ever taken a car to a garage for a service? The first thing the mechanic does is note down your registration and phone his local motor factors. From that registration he orders the parts needed to repair your car, now with a V6 fitted the wrong engine parts will be delivered! A specialised garage will obviously be able to cope but they are not always local.
It does amuse me that when I try to give sensible advice I get slated by non paid up members who appear to be wearing rose tinted spectacles. I have owned a number of kit cars over the years and finding parts can be a nightmare as it is not just a case of giving the registration, I needed new rear shocks for one of them and eventually found they were from a Hillman Imp van!!!
I will say again, if you are mechanically competent then a modified car can be fun, if you are not it can be a real nightmare. Obviously the choice is yours but I believe in trying to help people make a considered choice that they will not regret.

Don't worry about it mate, I am used to receiving abuse from certain people. All I have done on this thread is try to give both sides of the argument for owning a modified car, there are good things and bad things about owning one.
One thing no one has mentioned yet is insurance, now I believe charged is in that industry but failed to mention that insuring a modified car is quite a bit more expensive than insuring a standard car, strange that :-) Insuring a standard MK1 on a classic policy is very cheap, try getting a quote on a modified car many insurers will not touch them so you have to go specialist and they know how to charge!!

Yet again the voice of reason is wrong, talking about things he only thinks he knows about, my V6 is insured on a classic policy exactly like a standard MK1, agreed value exactly like a standard MK1, yes it has limited mileage exactly like a standard MK1, it also doesn't earn NCB, oh but neither would a standard MK1, before he thinks it's a scam, the insurer was provided with a full engineers report of the changes & modifications made to the car, it is also known on the DVLA database as having a 3L V6 fitted. For all of this I paid the hugely expensive £147 for the year, now I am an old bastard, live in a reasonably nice area, have 3 other cars insured but not with this broker or company, so maybe not everybody will get it quite as low, but I do know of people with MK2 V6's paying less.
But yes he is right to mention it, because for SOME people living in certain areas, with a certain history, working in certain industries it COULD cost more than a standard MK1. Oh it will also cost more to run,

You will enjoy it they are a great car, it will all depend on what you want out of a car, the other one you've not mentioned so far is a 1.5, a MK1 with a MK2 Turbo fitted
chasmundo

I used to own a mk1 mx5 which I sold last year. It wasn't fast but it made you feel like it was !!
It was lowered, sports exhaust, sports steering wheel and 4 wheel alignment. It was simple, fun and 100% reliable with no drama's....that's what I am looking for in my next car.
The v6 was only added to my list because of reading some reviews and watching YouTube videos of how the v6 should have been the car Toyota should have built. V6 over the turbo only because of the linear power delivery, relaxed lazy driving which is possible with the gearing. Also instant power without dropping a gear and spooling up the turbo.
More and more I think about it ...standard mk1 fits the bill but I shall know more next week after a drive in one.

The first thing you would do is let your mechanic know the cars is engine swapped so what you are saying is irrelevant.
I have already stated a specialist garage is the best bet for these cars, engine swapped or not.
I will also state again.. I am not a mechanic, I have owned a enjoyed modified AW11's for 10+ years.

I haven't worked in the insurance industry for years, thankfully.
I haven't mentioned it as it is not worth mentioning.. I insure x3 modified cars (3SGTE converted Mk1, GT86 & Civic Type R) and my insurance is cheaper on each car declared with all mods than it is for the same standard car.
So, it's not 'quite a bit more expensive' at all, for me it's the opposite.
Sure if one was 18 with 0 years NCB and comparing a standard car vs a modified car then the modified car would probably be more expensive to insure.

When I had my MK1 (3years ago) I was paying £78 per year on a limited mileage classic policy, so on that basis it looks like a V6 is about 90% more expensive to insure, no difference really :D

Weather permitting, i am hoping to go out for a drive in a standard one this weekend courtesy of a club member. This will narrow down whether standard power will be sufficient or i take the plunge for a v6.

That sounds good! The standard cars are quick enough for day to day use, but what prompted me into getting my Mk1.5 was at the time, I was going out on runs with people from Pistonheads, so Porsches, TVRs, Ferraris etc. and I needed more punch for the straights. I do think the V6 is a nice compromise between the standard car and the Mk1.5, but because of the torque, you end up driving it really lazily, whereas in a 4AGE'd car, it begs for you to stick to the higher revs.
One thing that really strikes home for me is that even after driving a V6 and a Mk1.5, the standard cars are still so much fun and in no way boring! :)

Hi guys I've got a 1mz v6 in my car and they're awesome. Not quite as revy as the 4age but the low end torque makes up for it. As for maintenance I use a local mechanic who takes care of my other cars and he's never had an issue working on it but it does help if you know which parts are from which cars. Firstly – thank you Myles for letting me loose on your car
My first impressions
Oh my god…no power steering ! I cant remember cars were ever like that.
Fantastic short shifter, so precise for a 30yr old car
Good acceleration in 2nd and 3rd gears
Awesome sounding exhaust
Great visibility from drivers seat
Very good handling when on the move, great suspension set up
After the test drive I jumped back into my daily driver, an old Lexus 430 …and thought I was in a 4x4. I couldn’t believe how low the Mr2 was compared to a normal car. I had to recheck my seat and thought my wife must have been playing with my seat settings
…A lot to like about the Mk1

Good to see you enjoyed your experience in a mk1. Now you just need to try a v6

If you're ever up in East Yorkshire, let me know and I'll see if it ties in with when I'm over where my V6 is being kept for winter. :+:

Well the search is finally over !
I have bought Bill's white N/A and I can't thank Bill enough for a stress free and haggle free sale.
He is a top man and a font of a lot of knowledge. I really do hope you stay with the club and continue to enjoy the social aspect ...health permitting.
Keep in touch and you are welcome to drive it anytime you are down south :-)

Thx...I'm soooo excited
It was torrential rain all the way home, so had to take it easy. Bill told me to respect the car in the wet..so only did 70mph ish :-)
