..because I don't have an MR2...doh.

I have always wanted one but for one reason or another, never got round to it.

Anyway, made the decision to get a project and revive an ailing two from the dead. When i get it, I'll try to join again! ;) I have spent the last few months reading incessantly about mr2 restoration so feel ready for the challenge..

One question, when i find the perfect project car it is likely to be sorn, with no tax or MOT. does anyone know the legaltities or the best way to move a SORN vehicle?

Hi all..

so when I was about 17 (18 years ago) i took a trip in a brand new red mk1. always thought to myself one day i will get one of those.

so after years of excuses, i joined your lovely club and went out today and bought this

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3610/3476599677_11e3b962cb_o.jpg

anyone recognise it? as it has mr2mk1 stickers on it and also a copy of the club magazine from 2005 in all the paperwork.

needs a lot of love to bring it back to its former glory but a lot has been spent on it already (arches done! yay). sills are pretty bad and a lot of tlc required. car was based in leicestershire but now has kent as its new home. those 160 miles were amazing!!

hopefully looking forward to meeting some of you guys at some upcoming events. I feell i might need the help!! :)

ps, silly question but i presume there is no shame in bringing a car along to an event even if it's not pristine or a work in progress? (new to all this)

better pictures will follow when it's all done

Looks like a good buy!
My car had stickers and a 2001 mag in it when I bought it, but I have no idea who it belonged to.

Don't worry about having a slightly tatty car, I can say from personal experience that there's no shame in it! (if you see my engine bay and rear quarters you'll understand what I mean  )

Nice to see another one in Kent too :+:

cheers I think i got a good one, well i hope so.

so far the shopping list is as follows:

tools - i havent got any :p
gear knob
gear gaiter
gear choser decal
interior door handles both sides
door switches boths sides (for windows etc)
aerial replacement
nicer matts
lots of cleaning stuff including carpet cleaner

to do list:

hoover the crumbs clean etc
sills (maybe next year!)
various bits of very minor rot
maybe two new front wings if i can get tem cheap enough
electric windows work but clunky
repairable stone chip on windscreen
driver and passenger windows seems a bit worn out/scratched
refurb the pepper pots
few bits of trim falling off
full service
full mop

good bits

everything else works fine! all 100% unmolested including original owners manual, radio and toolkit! drives lovely. according to the paperwork it was tuned a few years ago. under the impression that this car cant be tuned so much.. however it cost me an absolutely amazing £14 to drive 160 miles! (all motorway at 70 mph apart from a few minutes where i accidentally floored it. )

Absolutely not, we have all been there or are still there! The events are a social gathering where we meet and chat. You will find people very willing to offer advice and help as we all share a passion for these cars and the collective knowledge is superb. Come along and find out, you will not be disappointed.

There are a few events that require show cars, but the rest of us still attend and admire the cars. Gives us something to aim for!

Like the colour :+:

those pics will be 4 & 5 years old second one has my first MK1 in it UKO so must be 04 or 05
FLUD and Flitzer are MK1 Club Royalty so you must attend at some point i'm sure Fred would love to see his old car again
brief history
Fred (no Doris bought FLUD as a present for Fred) in Leek saffs. for Freds retirement (detailed in MK1 Club mag) some body work was done (article used to be on old MK1 Club web site) I think Fred owned FLUD for 5 or 6 years based in Loughborough, when Fred sold it the new owner had a bit of a prang I think and sold it on soon afterwards!

this is easter 06 & isn't that "old petrolhead" Richard Brett next to it?

hey that's amazing thanks for those pictures. that might explain why after 20 years it still drives like new and how come it has all the original bits and pieces. also the frunk is almost show condition.

the car has obviouslty had lots of love, followed by a bit of neglect....

I have a four day weekend coming up so i think i will be busy cleaning and assessing what needs to be done and I'll get some better pics up

Yes, thats Freds old car. He sold it in near perfect condition but i don't think the last owner loved it as much.
I'll let him know you've got it :+:

its really good to actually be helpul for once in a "do you know this car" thread as so many of them go unanswered
hopefully FLUD is in good enough condition to save, if not though second best is that you are now aware of the MK1 community and will stick around as there are plenty of good cars left :+:

to keep you in the loop i have spent about 15 hours on FLUD (or Harry) so far. mainly cleaning and tidying up.

i also tackled the rust today but it didnt go so well as halfords couldnt match the paint but i didnt find out until too late so i have the wrong colour in a few places. i also bodged it as i am a newbie however it's the front wings so not so bad and a few rust patches at bay ( I will probably replace the fronts at some point).....rears are fine.

i dont suppose anybody knows how i can get hold of some ice blue pearl? colour code 8g2. halfords say they have about 10 paints with that code and god bless them they tried. sadly they failed. i called my local toyota delaer and they were rude and hopeless...

on a plus side i took the manky old gear knob off today to look at the fitting. i was thinking about an aftermarket one (heathen) only to discover it was the orignal one with a rotten leather cover on it. removed the old manky leather and found a brand new shining original one underneath.

i still need a blue gaiter but working on that. also i have a problem with plants growing in the gaps. is this normal to have greenery sprouting in the crevices?

tomorrow its the engine bay and the carpets......
and the plants!

new gear gaiter and gear knob refurb can be had from Rhon for little money
http://www.imoc.co.uk/forums/profile.ph ... file&u=407 (http://www.imoc.co.uk/forums/profile.php?mode=viewprofile&u=407)
greanery is due to the car being stood in damp conditions but should clean up OK
for paint try a local paint supplier (halfords are crap for this!)
Edit!. Rhons MK1 club profile

will do. i will be going to the WRA at the end of May

I am trying not to to spend too much time and money on FLUD at the moment as i need an expert opinion as to whether it's worth the effort due to the rust underneath.

I am in the middle of moving house at the moment and dont have any ramps or jacks etc so still havent had a good look underneath..

I have replied on the WRA thread in the events section, but incase you dont go to that thread there is a convoy from South Mimms on Sun morning - have to be there for 6.30 am to leave at 7am prompt, as we're junction 30/31 of M25 it takes us 45 mins to get to South Mimms.

Well, after a few months happy motoring and lots of cleaning (oh how pointless it seems now!), i got to have a good inspection underneath. The result is pretty tragic. I have no idea how this car got an MOT last year as it has zero chance of getting one now.

The sils are probably about as bad as they can get without the middle of the car falling onto the road. i have yet to decide how much work to put into this.

I have set aside a weekend in two weeks time to take everything off and take some pics - I might need some advice!!!! At the moment, I am 50/50 whether FLUD will ever see tarmac again..... :(

crazylegs
29th June 2009, 04:09 PM
lets see some pictures. i am sure ist a first impression thing. sills are not that much of a problem usually its rust around the suspension mounts on the chassis that i dread.
any picure hosting site (photobucket etc ) will give you a link.

mk1 dal
11th September 2011, 10:09 PM
hi , this posts brings back some memories. I brought this car , the lad who originally posted decided it was to much for him to repair so i decided to fix her up . As regard to the sills you can use mk3 2 door escort sills , they will need around 15 degrees more bend across the full length but will fit perfect with the profile after you do this . Paul woods discovered they would fit many years ago and i spoke to and got the advice from him ( top man ) . or you could get them from the club site as i think they still sell them on here .

my project on fitting the mk3 sills http://www.mr2mk1club.com/showthread.php?6454-restoration-of-flud-%28sills-%29 hope this helps .
