 It's time to go!
Cash flow problems and a right old faff with my wifes company car situation mean that I've got to say goodbye to the Mk1.
The details:
• 1988 Toyota MR2 T-Bar 1600
• UK Car purchased Jan 1988
• Two owners from new. The original owner (MR2 Drivers club founder member) and me.
• The most ridiculously complete service history you will ever see for a car. I have a spreadsheet detailing every tank of fuel this car has had since the day it rolled out of the showroom. Every service, every spare part, every MOT. It's all there.
• MOT until April 2011 - Passed last MOT with no advisorys.
• Tax until end of Dec 2010.
• Metallic Grey and one of very few UK cars in this colour.
• 124,000 miles
• 3 keys including original "valet" key
• V5 present and correct
• Located near J4 of the M40 - Buckinghamshire
In the last 2 years the car has had the following completed:
• Full suspension refurb comprising:
• New Koni adjustable dampers
• Matched Lesjofors sports springs. Lovely ride and balanced handling.
• Every bush replaced with Superflex Poly Bushes.
• All new drop links
• All ball joints and inner and outer track rod ends on the steering rack replaced.
• Rear toe arms replaced with fully adjustable stainless items.
• Struts, ARB's and brackets powercoated. Arms and linkages plasticoated. They're alloy so they don't rust, but they look tidyier.
• Top mounts inspected and Hammerited
• Full 4 wheel geometry alignment to 'TRD' Fast road specifications.
This car handles as a new one would of, had it had the benefit of another 20 years chassis development. It's beautiful to drive, I maintain that nothing teaches you the basics of car control and traction better than one of these cars. Whilst the 30mm drop makes it look low, it's absolutely fine on broken roads and over speedbumps etc. The ride is compliant, balanced and well controlled, and can be firmed up in an instant by adjusting the Konis'. Anyone considering parting with readies will of course be welcome to test drive provided you're insured.
Wheels and tyres
5 Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD2's 18 months ago. Half worn I'd say. Spare is unused.
Original 14" pepperpot alloys.
Full refurbish on all 5 alloys.
Servicing
New spark plugs about 4,000 miles ago along with filters and Magnatec 10W40. I have changed the oil 3 times since I've had it.
New waterpump and radiator about 3 years ago. I am assured that when this work was done it was done as preventative measure as the radiator was past it’s best, the car did NOT run hot or overheat. I can vouch for the integrity of the cooling system – motorways speeds or stuck in an hour of traffic in 27 degrees yesterday and the car is fine.
One problem!
I should note that at present the car has a faulty diff bearing - it grinds when you lift off of the throttle. Car still drives absolutely fine, but I have a replacement 80,000 mile box to go onto it and for the asking price (ONO) this work will be done by a reputable garage and an ex-mk1 owning mechanic! If you want to do this work yourself then price is obviously negotiable including the gearbox.
Brakes
New front discs and Ferodo standard road pads.
HEL braided brake lines.
Entirely new handbrake cables for last years MOT. This MR2 is almost unique in that you can park it on a hill.
Others
Mongoose Full Stainless exhaust. Nice sound and not too loud.
Interior
Black and grey velour interior which is very tasteful. I've sourced a few bits like a replacement gear gaitor and a nice condition steering wheel so this is now original. I have the T-Bar sun blinds and the T-bar panel bags that reside behind the seats. I sound deadened the floor pan and bulkhead and this helps with the general long distance driveability of it.
All electrics (mirrors, windows, central locking, pop up lights) work.
ICE
Pansonic “Sound quality†CD-Tuner head unit and MP3 player with front Aux in (for connecting an iPod or similar)
Upgraded Hertz 4†front speakers – Very nice quality.
(those who recall my other stereo install, I have now returned it to standard).
Electric aerial still works.
Original Toyota Tape Deck included for authenticitys sake, but I believe one amplifier channel is broken.
Exterior:
Generally good.
This car was garaged for the first 20 years of it's life and very well undersealed. The Mechanics and MOT testers who've worked on it, a few of whom have owned MK1's themselves have always commented on the chassis integrity of this one. It really is very nice underneath. At present there is bubbling at the base of the drivers side wing at the A-Pillar which has stayed static since I've owned the car, it has yet to some through so we've come to an understanding that it won't bother me if I don't bother it. The same wing has a tiny bubble at the top of the arch which again hasn’t worsened in the last 2 years. A Wing replacement (£130 new wing) and spraying it would be the way to sort this if you're after perfection. The drivers floorpan has one small rust patch where a stone has knocked the under seal off. The rear wings were professionally and very nicely restored about a year before I got the car (so 2007) with entirely new panels sprayed to match the car and are completely rust free. Top of windscreen is perfect, which is rare, they normally rot. The rear bumper looks to have been resprayed at some time as it hasn't got a nice lacquer finish and looks a little dull compared to the rest of the car. There are some small static chips in the windscreen but none causing a problem for visibility.
So in summary, I believe this is the BEST Mk1 MR2 you will find for this money. It has been utterly reliable over 2 years and 10,000 miles and the documented history of this car is unparalleled. There are very, very few one or two owner cars left around!
Initial enquiries by email "jonathan_standen@hotmail . com" and I'll get back to you with a phone number, this is because I'm a shift worker.
Test pilots welcome so long as there is clear intent to buy and you produce a licence and insurance document which proves that you are insured.
Asking £1,700 OVNO!
