well i'm not quite an mk1 owner yet but i am shopping. i have wanted one of these for a while and with the sale of my spitfire (sad day) and my paseo i have been cleared by her indoors to replace my daily commute ('84 vw polo) with a fruity MR2 MK1

so a few questions to start, who do you guys recommend for insurance? and what areas should i be most wary of when shopping for my next new toy (not looking for immaculate, just MoT sound).

Hello, and welcome! Some good cars already then! :)

For insurance, we've just started this thread:
viewtopic.php?f=3&t=7383 (http://www.mr2mk1club.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=7383)

However, there are some other insurance threads in that section you may want to peruse.

There's the Mk1 Club Buyers Guide here:
http://www.mr2mk1club.com/_newsite/inde ... uyersguide (http://www.mr2mk1club.com/_newsite/index.php?currPage=mr2mk1_buyersguide)

It's definitely a buyers market still, so you should be able to find one that suits the bill without too much difficulty!

Fantastic cars. I am sure you will love them (but then most people on this site are going to be positive). Yes, they can rust, a lot, so they need taking care of but they are over 20 years old now.....

If you see one you like, post it up and we can give you some pointers.

If there is a member nearby, I am sure they will let you look at their cars and show you what to look for.

Have a think about your budget and what you want, there aren't a lot of choices really, colour being the main one and whether you want the T-Bar or not (open top but usually leaks to some extent).

wow, that is a very comprehensive buyers guide (but i guess not exhaustive)

i'm looking at one in the new forest, with the sunroof (any specific warnings for them?)

in red at present and it appears to have had the drivers wing repainted along with a drivers door. however the rear arches appear sound (not great but sound)

sunroof models don't ususally leak at all. t-bar often all leak to some extent, but can be fixed.

Rear arches are the hardest to fix, as you can't but new whole panels, you get arch repair sections to weld in, so be more picky with rear rust than front arch rust - which you can replace whole panels if needed.

well with great thanks to the guide from on here i think i have done alright for myself deposit down for an '88 mk1b with sunroof, the paintwork is in much need of attention but the body appears sound (apart from a suspiciously DIY job of the drivers rear arch) but nothing i'm not willing to get stuck into. will post some pics when i have taken collection. (it still has a complete tool bag, the sunroof blind thing and frunk plastics/rad plastic!
